Recently, low carb diets have been getting a bad rap. There are a number of side effects, but these are side effects that shouldn't occur if you follow low carbohydrate programs like the Atkins diet the way it's meant to be followed.
Reported Side Effects of a Low Carbohydrate Diet
Some of the side effects of being on a low carbohydrate diet are mild, and some are severe. But low carbohydrate like the Atkins diet only restrict carbs for two weeks during the Induction phase. Then they allow you to have more carbs in the form of vegetables until you are within 10 pounds of your ideal weight. At that time, you get even more carbs (complex carbohydrates, not simple) and it slows your weight loss greatly.
The reported side effects of low carbohydrate plans are bad breath, headaches, grouchiness and constipation. These are a result of uric acid and ketones being released into your bloodstream when fat is being burned for fuel because your body isn't getting any carbs to burn for fuel like it had before. This fat-burning state is called ketosis, and it occurs during the Induction phase and the Ongoing Weight Loss phase. However, the Atkins diet web site addresses these issues and offers ways to prevent some of them. And once you are in the Pre-Maintenance phase and Lifetime Maintenance, you probably won't be in ketosis anymore.
Because the fastest weight loss usually occurs during the Induction phase, people who are on a low carbohydrate diet want that to continue. So they extend this phase on their own. They might keep themselves in this phase too long, which can lead to serious health risks like gout and kidney damage.
So if you decide to go on a low carbohydrate, whether it's Atkins, South Beach, The Zone, Neanderthin, Protein Power, Sugarbusters or some other plan, follow it according to the way it's meant to be followed. Otherwise, you are putting your health at risk. Is it really worth it?
