Low Carbohydrate Diet

The restrictions on a low carbohydrate diet--particularly during the first two weeks, should make you suspcious. After all, was it carrots that made you fat?

Questioning A Low Carbohydrate Diet
Many opponents of a low carbohydrate diet will say that it's not healthy to remove an entire food group from your diet. And since carbohydrates are a micronutrient found in two food groups, if you're on a low carbohydrate diet, you're actually eliminating two food groups:

Fruits and vegetables - No fruit is allowed on a low carbohydrate diet for a very, very long time, and most vegetables are limited for a long time as well.
Whole grains - Bread, pasta, rice and cereal all contain carbohydrates.

Since fruits and vegetables have lots of vitamins and fiber, elimintaing them from your diet can leave you deficient in a number of areas. Sure, you can take a multi-vitamin, and you should be doing that anyway, but getting those vitamins from natural sources instead of a pill is usually better for you because there are other nutrients that you need that you can't buy in a bottle. Chances are, it's not fruit and vegetables that caused you to gain weight, so why would you want to eliminate those? And if your weight gain is due to excessive amounts of breads, pasta, rice and desserts, then switch to whole wheat or whole grain breads and pastas, brown or long grain rice and cut back--way back--on sweets.

As far as vitamins go, some low carb diets suggest taking up to 30 different types of supplements a day. But how realistic is that? Seriously. There are a number of multivitamins on the market today, and some are specifically designed for people on a low carbohydrate diet. If you must be on a low carb diet, take one of those, along with a fiber supplement to prevent constipation, and check with your doctor at least once a year to make sure you're not deficient in anything.
