	<title>Complex Carbohydrates</title>
	<description>
I wish they all could be complex carbohydrates...
[sung to the tune of the Beach Boys' "California Girls"]

Don't we all. If they were, life would be a lot simpler. You'd see a lot fewer obese and disgusting people in your day to day life, that is for certain. But sadly, most carbs do not qualify as complex carbohydrates. The definition of a complex one is one that actually has depth. Kind of like a complex person. It provides the nutrients you need without constantly bogging you down, and you have a way to bounce back from the severely bad dietary trends you have been following up until now.

To put it even more simply, complex carbohydrates are good for you. They give your body what it needs while not forcing upon it the empty carbs (the "bad" ones) that simply make it get fatter. It is a nice arrangement for everyone involved.

If you deprive your body of all carbs, including the complex carbohydrates you need, you may lose weight awfully fast. The theory behind low carb plans -- of your body attacking stored fat cells and breaking those bitches down when you cut off the carbohydrate intake -- may have some legitimacy. But lest we forget that carbs give us fuel to burn, so to speak? That the body needs them if it wants to ward off kidney and liver problems, as well as have the energy to exercise, which is a fundamental component of any diet? Do not underestimate the importance of some carbohydrates in your life. Just make sure they are the complex kind.
