Low carb food can also make a low carb diet easier. But watch your labels--foods that are labeled as "low carb food" may be very similar to their full carb counterparts.

Low Carb Food

If you're in an advanced stage of a low carb diet, you might be looking for low carb food labels at the grocery store. But buyer beware! Often, these foods aren't that different from non-low-carb versions.

Low Carb Food Labels
When low fat diets were all the rage in the 80s, low fat or no fat versions of foods cropped up everywhere. Many people bought the lower fat versions of these foods thinking they could control their weight or eat more of the food. However, lower fat doesn't always mean lower calories. To compensate for the lack of fat, sugar is usually added. That way taste isn't sacrificed. And no matter what diet your on, the bottom line is the same. You still have to burn more calories than you take in if you want ot lose weight.

Now, low carb diets are all the rage, and predictably, food manufacturers are responding with low carb food that supposedly has fewer carbs. These foods are often more expensive when the nutrients are nearly identical. For example, look at the difference in the following products:

A slice of bread with a low carb food label has 60 calories and 8 grams of total carbs. A slice of a conventional diet bread typically has 50 calories and 10 grams of carbs.
A 12-ounce can of Michelob Ultra (a beer marketed as low carb) has 95 calories and 2.6 grams of carbs. Miller Lite has 96 calories and 3.2 grams of carbs, and Coors Lite has 102 calories and 5 grams of carbs.

This is also the case with many other low carb food on the market today.

At least you don't have to worry about counting carbs when it comes to meat. Meat is naturally a low carb food that's high in protein--perfect for a low carb diet! As far as other foods go, use a carb counting guide and read your labels!
